At a glance
Great Britain checks identification, rabies preparation, the correct travel document and the permitted arrival route. Dogs may also need tapeworm treatment. The applicable process depends on the origin and circumstances of the move.
- Confirm the arrival route before buying tickets.
- Review whether the movement qualifies for the pet-travel process.
- Treat Northern Ireland as a separate destination for requirements.
Who this guide is for: Dogs and cats entering England, Scotland or Wales. Northern Ireland follows separate guidance.
Start with the Great Britain entry rules
GOV.UK’s guidance covers England, Scotland and Wales. It directs travelers to separate rules for Northern Ireland. Microchipping, rabies preparation and the correct travel document are central checks; origin-specific requirements can include further testing. Check the official guide for your departure country.
Ask the team to review the proposed arrival airport and operating airline before treating an itinerary as suitable for your pet. A flight that works for a passenger may not provide the required pet route or acceptance.
Tell us when the owner and pet are traveling
The official guidance requires extra rules when a pet is sold, rehomed or ownership is transferred; when it arrives more than five days before or after its owner; or for more than five pets outside specified event exceptions. A pet can travel with someone else when authorized in writing.
Share the purpose of the move and the owner’s itinerary at intake. If the pet goes ahead of the family, ask the team to confirm the correct movement category. Avoid describing every escorted journey as automatically eligible for the same paperwork.
Check the dog and cat details separately
Dogs may require tapeworm treatment before entry. Ask the veterinarian to confirm whether it applies and the exact timing for the planned journey. Do not assume a cat needs the same treatment simply because both pets are flying together.
For a household with multiple animals, make a pet-by-pet preparation table. Include identification, records, document status and travel container. This makes differences visible before the final appointment.
Plan clearance and the final handoff
Write down where the pet will be released, who will collect it and how the receiver will be contacted. Ask which original documents travel with the pet and what the pickup process looks like after arrival checks.
If you need transport beyond the arrival airport, include that address in the quote request. Keep the first day’s plan flexible enough to account for the actual release time, rather than tying pickup to the aircraft’s scheduled landing alone.

- Departure country and city, destination in Great Britain and proposed dates.
- Owner travel dates and whether ownership will change.
- Each pet’s breed, age, weight, microchip and available rabies records.
- Pickup or delivery needs and your preference for coordinated or assisted travel.
